Outstandingly imaginative winners of the GDA Urban Design and Smart Cities Award

This year’s GDA Urban Design and Smart Cities Awards showcase a remarkable surge of imaginative and forward-thinking projects, addressing the pressing challenges of our time. The winners stand out for their innovative approaches to tackling critical global crises—from climate change to urban mobility and the evolution of sustainable technologies.

Highlights include groundbreaking solutions for more efficient urban transport management, introducing systems that integrate smart data to ease congestion and enhance city living. Self-driving electric vehicles also take center stage, promising cleaner, safer, and more autonomous urban mobility.

Notably, this year’s winners also confront the urgent threat of rising sea levels in vulnerable regions such as the Netherlands. Their designs propose adaptive strategies and bold solutions, reimagining how cities and communities can thrive despite environmental challenges.

Seascape is a visionary response to climate change and rising sea levels in Holland and the Friesian Islands. It reimagines living with vertical sea villages—sustainable, self-sufficient communities built offshore. These compact villages offer homes, offices, schools, and shops, blending functionality with proximity to the mainland.

CCAR introduces a groundbreaking concept in autonomous urban EVs, purpose-built to transport one or two passengers efficiently. Unlike conventional cars equipped with sensors, CCAR represents a complete reimagining of urban transport. It offers a secure, safe, and swift travel experience, tailored to users' needs. By integrating proven technologies with the expanding potential of AI, CCAR sets a new standard for intelligent urban mobility systems. The EU version of the CCAR uses the same platform with the main cabin module adapted to suit EU regulations and transport culture.

The CityGPT Electric Bus Wizard is a major step forward for smart city public transportation. By integrating advanced AI and sleek design, it offers a top-tier user experience and efficient urban management. CityGPT, a generative AI, analyzes and visualizes data on pedestrian traffic, vehicle movements, and road conditions, making it vital for smart city infrastructure.

The Taiwanese design team focused on clear communication and readability for the users and at the same time, reduced the carbon footprint. Its modular approach enhances regulatory efficiency and helps the transport decision-makers understand data through intuitive visuals. This innovation not only improves urban services but also supports the city's journey towards net-zero emissions, underscoring a commitment to sustainability.
