There has never been a more exciting time than now to save the planet and see real significant changes for the better. To a very large extent, the climate and energy crises are going to be decided by how we move about. Until now, a huge proportion of fossil fuel energy was consumed by individuals in cars, driving unnecessarily large distances most days of their lives. The use of the word unnecessary is deliberate here.
Cities have been planned and designed in ways where the use of a car is unavoidable. All that is changing now. Part of our solutions now in the 21st century is that cities and towns will respond so that neighbours will be more reachable in shorter distances. This has already introduced a plethora of new ground-breaking mobility products. The Segway was an early contender but since then a multitude of solutions have appeared. None least than the electric car and the plug-in hybrid variant.
One of the striking features of all this is that DESIGN is having a huge impact on the way the change over from fossil-fuels to electric is happening. Electric mobility is substantially different now and the uptake of the new solutions is based on the quality of the actual products. Not just in the aesthetics or fashion, but in the quality of the user experience, the well-considered function and the use of the materials and technology. These are design qualities that will lead the way.
Supporting and nudging this forward-looking development, the GDA awards have specifically made categories of awards that highlight achievement in this field.
