CLIMATE WAR

The tragedy of the war in the Ukraine is wreaking havoc with all European hopes of peace and the movement towards a very much sustainable use of energy. As well as the harsh realities of the actual combat, the use of oil and gas as strategic forces has motivated the EU to reintroduce some of the most CO2 polluting types of energy. However the outcome may yet be more positive than is seems at present.

CLIMATE WAR

As citizens and companies are faced with impossibly high increases in their energy supplies, they also have to cope with those supplies actually being cut off for periods if the winter is extreme. Energy poverty and health-threatening lack of heating is a problem that may be a scourge in many European communities. The immediate answer is to return to many of the polluting power generation systems that had been planned to be switched off to assist the climate. At the same type, the types of energy sources that are sustainable in the long run and also independent of imported fuel should be seeing greater uptake. That could be the optimistic scenario, but it is in the long-term. Already some EU countries have a large percentage of their electrical power from sustainable natural green sources. There is also another great factor and that is our daily routines and behaviour.

The pandemic has shown us all very clearly that as individuals we all have a role to play is solving large scale issues. One thing is to generate energy, the other button to press is how to use that energy. If we go by e-scooter, bike, or walk, obviously that will help our health and also our surroundings. If our car is an EV, yes again, the city will benefit from noise reduction and considerably less air pollution. If we take the train instead of shorter air trips. If we work from home instead of commuting to the office.

We all have a role to play. There is still something called a GREEN citizen. Engineers, designers all have a part to play.
