Biodiversity Study by Bothnia Young Group – Hailuoto, Finland

The Bothnia Young Group conducted a biodiversity study on Hailuoto, an island in the Gulf of Bothnia, Finland. The research focused on the increasing diversity of flora and insect life as the island evolves. Hailuoto is formed through crustal rebound, a geological process where land rises after being compressed under glacial ice. Over time, sea waves, currents, ice thrust, and wind continuously shape the island’s landscape, creating dynamic habitats.

Surprisingly, despite the young and relatively inexperienced nature of the group, the study revealed previously unknown scientific details about the island’s biodiversity. Their findings provide fresh insights into how young landforms support ecological growth, contributing valuable knowledge to the field.
